1. WHAT ACICLOSTAD IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR

Aciclostad is a medicine used to treat viral infections (antiviral). Aciclostad is used to relieve pain and itching associated with frequently recurring herpes infections with blistering of the lips (recurrent herpes labialis).

2. BEFORE YOU USE ACICLOSTAD

Acyclostad must not be used if you are allergic to aciclovir, valaciclovir, propylene glycol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Warnings and Precautions:
Please note the following warnings before and during treatment with Aciclostad:

  • The cream must not be applied to mucous membranes (e.g. in the oral cavity, on the eyes or in the vagina), otherwise local irritation is to be expected. In particular, avoid accidental contact of the cream with the eyes.
  • If you have a severe immune system disorder (e.g. AIDS or after a bone marrow transplant), you must speak to a doctor before starting treatment. In this case, he may prescribe you aciclovir in tablet form.

Using Aciclostad with other medicines:
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using, have recently used or might use any other medicines. No clinically significant interactions have been identified to date.

Pregnancy and breast feeding period:
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

Pregnancy:
Aciclostad should only be used during pregnancy after a careful risk/benefit assessment. Therefore, please talk to a doctor before using Aciclostad.

Breastfeeding:
Aciclovir is hardly absorbed by the body after external application on healthy skin. The dose that a child would ingest from breast-feeding after the mother has given Aciclostad cream is therefore low. If Aciclostad cream is used during breast-feeding, contact of the breast-fed child with the treated parts of the body should be avoided.

Driving and using machines:
No effects on the ability to drive and use machines have been reported to date.

Aciclostad contains cetyl alcohol and propylene glycol:
Cetyl alcohol may cause localized skin irritation (eg contact dermatitis). Propylene glycol may cause skin irritation.

3. HOW TO USE ACICLOSTAD

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the recommended dose is: You should apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected skin areas 5 times a day at intervals of 4 hours during the day.

Type of application:
When applying Aciclostad you must consider the following:

  • You should apply Aciclostad using a cotton swab, smearing it with an amount appropriate to the size of the affected area of skin.
  • When applying, you should make sure that you not only cover the already visible signs of herpes (bubbles, swelling, redness) with the cream, but that you also include adjacent areas in the treatment.
  • If you apply it by hand, you should clean it thoroughly before and afterwards to prevent additional infection of the damaged skin area (e.g. by bacteria) or transmission of the virus to mucous membrane and skin areas that are not yet infected.

Special hint:
In order to achieve the best possible treatment success, Aciclostad should be used at the first sign of herpes disease (burning, itching, a feeling of tension and redness). Once the blisters have crusted over or healed, antiviral treatment with aciclostad is no longer useful.

Duration of use:
The duration of treatment is generally 5 days. In individual cases, treatment should be continued until the blisters have crusted over or healed. However, a treatment duration of 10 days should not be exceeded.

If you forget to use Aciclostad:
Continue treatment as directed (eg do not apply the cream more often or thicker).

If you stop using Aciclostad:
For successful treatment, it is important to use aciclostad for a sufficiently long time.

If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
