Content of the pack and further information
1. What is folic acid off and what is it used for?
folic acid ABF is a vitamin preparation. Folic acid AB is used to treat folic acid deficiencies that cannot be remedied dietetically.
2. What should you consider before taking folic acid?
folic acid ABB must not be taken if they are allergic to folic acid or one of the other components of this drug mentioned in section 6. The increase in young red blood cells (reticulocytes) caused by folic acid can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency. Due to the risk of irreversible neurological disorders, anemia must be ensured before the therapy of anemia due to disturbed development of red blood cells (megaloblast anemia) that this is not based on a vitamin B12 deficiency. The cause of a megaloblast anemia must be clarified before the start of therapy.
Warnings and precautions:
Please speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking folic acid. Even in the event of life-threatening anemia as a result of disturbed development of red blood cells (megaloblast anemia), a possible vitamin B12 deficiency must be excluded due to the risk of permanent damage to the nervous system before the start of therapy (ensuring serum and erythrocyte samples and determination of the vitamin B12 content) .
Taking folic acid AB together with other drugs:
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you take/use other medicines, have recently taken up/applied other medicines or intend to use/apply other medicines. The administration of folic acid can reduce the blood levels of funds against seizures (anticonvulsiva, e.g. phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone) and thereby increase the willingness to seize. When gifted high doses, it cannot be ruled out that folic acid and at the same time administered inhibitors of folic acid (folic acid antagonists), such as certain drugs against bacterial infections or malaria (trimethoprim, proguanil, pyrimethamin) and methotrexate (active ingredient, etc. inhibit each other in their effect. The simultaneous administration of folic acid and fluorouracil or oral fluoropyrimidines (e.g. capecitabine) (medicinal substances for the treatment of cancer) can lead to an impairment and thus an increase in the cell -damaging effect of fluorouracil or oral fluoropyrimide (e.g. capecitabine). This can be expressed, for example, in severe diarrhea. Chloramphenicol (active ingredient to treat infections) can prevent response to treatment with folic acid and should therefore not be administered to patients with severe folic acid deficiency symptoms.
pregnancy and lactation:
If you are pregnant or breastfeed, or if you suspect that you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine. Controlled studies on pregnant women with daily doses up to 5 mg folic acid have given no indication of damage to the unborn child. A folic acid supplement can reduce the risk of neural tube defects (malformation during the development of the child in the womb). Since the safety of a higher dosage is not guaranteed, a dosage of more than 5 mg folic acid per day during pregnancy and lactation must not be taken.
Folic acid abstils lactose:
Please only take folic acid off after consultation with your doctor if you know that you suffer from intolerance to certain sugars.
3. How can folic acid be taken?
Always take this medicine exactly as described in this package insert or take precisely after instruction from your doctor or pharmacist. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the recommended dose is:
1 - 3 tablets folic acid off per day (corresponding to 5 - 15 mg folic acid).
dosage during pregnancy and lactation:
1 tablet folic acid ABF per day (corresponding to 5 mg folic acid) (see 2. "pregnancy and lactation").
Type of application:
The tablets are taken with some fluid for meals. The duration of the treatment depends on the extent of the folic acid defect and depends on the clinical image and, if necessary, the corresponding laboratory diagnostic measurement variables, it is determined by the doctor for each patient.
If you have taken a larger amount of folic acid than you should:
If the higher dosage occasionally, no overdose signs can be expected. In patients with seizures, however, there may be an increase in willingness to seize. With high doses (taking over 15 mg per day and longer than 4 weeks), gastrointestinal disorders, sleep disorders, excitement and depression can occur. In these cases you should contact your doctor.
If you have any further questions about taking this medicine, please contact your doctor or pharmacist.
4. What side effects are possible?
Like all medicines, this medicine can also have side effects, but this does not have to occur with everyone.
rarely (can affect up to 1 out of 1,000):
